Assisi - Italy #5 | Rocca Maggiore
Hey guys!
Shall we go to day 5 of our trip?
Today was a special day, with a place that is truly worth visiting: Rocca Maggiore ✨
Before that, I once again walked through the city center, taking my time and noticing details that sometimes go unnoticed. The panoramic view of the city, the views from the higher streets, the medieval alleys, and the architecture that I absolutely love!
On the way, we passed by the house of a friend of my father, Alberto, a painter — and there I met his very cute cat named Blue 🐾 I took a few photos of her because it was impossible not to be charmed.
I also came across a street artist creating religious paintings directly on the ground using colored chalk. You could really see the care in every stroke. It was a bit sad to think that the artwork would be gone from the ground in just a few days.
Around lunchtime, I went out to eat with my father and my friends. They chose very typical dishes like risotto, pasta, and pizza… but I wanted to try something different 😅
I ended up finding a curious sandwich: bread with sausage and fries inside. It might sound a bit strange, but it really reminded me of that simple English sandwich with bread, butter, and fries — and honestly, it was quite tasty. I’ve even mentioned something similar in a post I made about Wales. If you’d like to take a look, I’ll leave the link here: Wales Travel Post
After lunch, my father went back to the hotel, and I went with one of my friends to Rocca Maggiore.
The climb isn’t easy — it’s a long walk up sloped streets, since the fortress sits at the top of the hill. But the view makes it completely worth it.
Rocca Maggiore is an imposing medieval fortress that overlooks the entire city of Assisi. Its origins date back to the 12th century, but it was destroyed during conflicts and later rebuilt in the 14th century by order of Cardinal Albornoz, who aimed to reassert the Church’s control over the region. An interesting fact is that Saint Francis of Assisi himself, when he was still young, was once imprisoned there during a war between Assisi and Perugia.
The structure we see today still preserves this strong and strategic character: thick walls, watchtowers, and an elevated position that allowed the monitoring of any movement around the city. It was literally a defensive stronghold — and today, it has become one of the best viewpoints in Assisi.
Beyond its history, the place has a very unique atmosphere. The stones, the silence, the wind… everything gives you the feeling of going back in time. For those who enjoy medieval settings, it’s a truly remarkable place.
We arrived close to sunset, and that made all the difference. The golden light hitting the buildings, the city below starting to light up… it was one of the most beautiful views I’ve experienced so far 🌅

My friend took the opportunity to practice yoga right there, with that landscape in the background — I’ll admit I found it a bit bold of her, since it’s a public space, but she didn’t mind.
Meanwhile, I stayed there taking photos, filming, and simply enjoying the moment.
