Hoje dia 6 da viagem! Vamos falar um pouco sobre a catedral de São Rufino, aqui em Assis? ✨
Mas antes… comecei o dia de forma simples. Na verdade, já direto com o almoço 😅 acordei um pouco mais tarde, dei uma voltinha e depois fui encontrar meu pai. Tivemos uma refeição bem gostosa, com bastante vegetais — leve, saudável e muito saborosa.
Vocês sabem que eu adoro compartilhar essas pequenas coisas do dia a dia, e minhas refeições, até porque podem servir de inspiração também 💛
Mais tarde, encontrei com uma amiga muito querida, a Alessandra — aquela mesma do passeio no cemitério que já contei aqui nos posts anteriores, mas que vou deixar o link do post aqui para quem quiser conferir: Post Cemitério de Assis.
But first… I started the day in a simple way. Actually, straight to lunch 😅 I woke up a bit later, took a short walk, and then went to meet my father. We had a really nice meal, with plenty of vegetables — light, healthy, and very tasty.
You know I love sharing these small everyday moments, especially my meals, since they can even inspire you in the kitchen 💛

Fomos caminhar pela cidade e, durante esse passeio, passamos por uma pequena galeria bem interessante, logo ao lado da catedral. Ela tinha esculturas incríveis de felinos — panteras, leopardos… e um leopardo branco que era simplesmente lindo e gigante.
Além disso, havia esculturas em pedra e algumas peças que, sinceramente, me lembraram muito uma estética druídica — algo mais antigo, quase místico. Foi um lugar que chamou bastante minha atenção, logo ao lado fica a Catedral de São Rufino, que é o destaque de hoje.
We went for a walk around the city and, during this stroll, we passed by a small gallery right next to the cathedral that was really interesting. It had incredible sculptures of felines — panthers, leopards… and a white leopard that was simply beautiful and huge.
There were also stone sculptures and some pieces that, honestly, really reminded me of a druidic aesthetic — something older, almost mystical. It was a place that really caught my attention. Right next to it is the Cathedral of Saint Rufino, which is the highlight of today.
A catedral de São Rufino, o padroeiro
A catedral tem origem no século XII e é dedicada a São Rufino de Assis, considerado o santo padroeiro da cidade. Segundo a tradição, ele foi o primeiro bispo de Assis e morreu como mártir ainda na época do Império Romano.
A primeira coisa que chama atenção é a estrutura externa: toda feita em pedra clara (muito provavelmente mármore ou pedra calcária típica da região), com esses detalhes esculpidos ao redor das portas — pássaros, flores, arabescos… tudo muito delicado e cheio de significado. A fachada é um dos exemplos mais bonitos da arquitetura românica da região da Úmbria.
Dentro da catedral, existe também uma cripta onde estão preservados restos associados a São Rufino, o que torna o lugar ainda mais carregado de história.

The Cathedral of Saint Rufino, the patron saint
The cathedral dates back to the 12th century and is dedicated to Saint Rufino of Assisi, considered the patron saint of the city. According to tradition, he was the first bishop of Assisi and died as a martyr during the time of the Roman Empire.
The first thing that stands out is the exterior structure: entirely made of light-colored stone (most likely marble or the typical limestone of the region), with carved details around the doors — birds, flowers, arabesques… all very delicate and full of meaning. The façade is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in the Umbria region.
Inside the cathedral, there is also a crypt where remains associated with Saint Rufino are preserved, making the place even more rich in history.
Abaixo da catedral - no subterrâneo, existe um grande nível arqueológico, com escavações que revelam estruturas antigas da época medieval. Esse espaço foi transformado em uma espécie de museu, onde é possível ver ruínas, paredes antigas e fragmentos históricos preservados. Entre outros objetos, vestimentas de líderes religiosos dos séculos passados e muita coisa que enriquece a história da cidade.
E o mais curioso: em algumas partes do piso da igreja, há áreas de vidro onde você pode caminhar e olhar diretamente para essas escavações abaixo. É uma sensação muito diferente — quase como estar entre dois tempos ao mesmo tempo.
Below the cathedral — in the underground level — there is a large archaeological area, with excavations that reveal ancient structures from the medieval period. This space has been turned into a kind of museum, where you can see ruins, old walls, and preserved historical fragments. Among other items, there are garments of religious leaders from past centuries and many pieces that enrich the history of the city.
And the most curious part: in some areas of the church floor, there are glass sections where you can walk and look directly down at these excavations. It’s a very unique feeling — almost like being between two different periods of time at once.
Também dá pra perceber o cuidado ao longo dos séculos na preservação da estrutura. Algumas partes das pedras possuem suportes metálicos discretos, justamente para garantir que os detalhes originais continuem intactos até hoje.
Essa catedral também tem um papel muito importante na história, pois foi ali que São Francisco de Assis e Santa Clara de Assis foram batizados.
Há alguns anos atrás eu fiz um vlog desse museu (da cidade em si, mas tem um trecho onde filmei o museu). This cathedral also plays a very important role in history, as it is where Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Clare of Assisi were baptized.

Depois de observar tudo isso, fiquei pensando como lugares assim conseguem carregar tanta história em silêncio. Não é só uma construção bonita — é um espaço que atravessou séculos e ainda está ali, firme. Foi um passeio bem tranquilo, mas muito interessante.
Se você gosta de história, arquitetura medieval ou até mesmo de observar detalhes artísticos com calma, esse é um lugar que vale muito a pena conhecer.
After observing all of this, I found myself thinking about how places like this can carry so much history in silence. It’s not just a beautiful building — it’s a space that has crossed centuries and is still standing strong. It was a very calm visit, but truly interesting.
If you enjoy history, medieval architecture, or even just taking your time to observe artistic details, this is definitely a place worth visiting.
