Hoje iremos passear um pouco na história de uma igreja histórica que fica ali no centro de Assis!
Mas antes de irmos para lá, eu e meu pai (e as amigas dele), passeamos um pouco pela cidade - algo tranquilo! Passamos também em um museu que estava expondo artes na Piazza Comune.
Nas ruas ao arredor perto da Catedral de Santa Chiara, tinha um senhor com umas artes lindíssimas - as fotos que compartilho abaixo!
Perto da hora do almoço, meu pai voltou para o hotel, e eu fui andar sozinha por Assis...

Welcome to day 7 of the trip!
Today we will explore a bit of the history of a historic church located right in the center of Assisi!
But before going there, my father (and his friends) and I walked around the city a little — something peaceful! We stopped by a museum that was exhibiting art in Piazza Comune too.
In the streets around Santa Chiara Cathedral, there was an old man with some beautiful artworks — the photos I’m sharing below!
Around lunchtime, my father went back to the hotel, and I went to walk alone through Assisi...
Então fui passear nos pontos que eu aidna não tinha ido, ou que não tinha registrado. E ao lado do convento que eu estava hospedada tinhas a tal Chiesa Nueva!
Então vamos contar um pouco mais sobre essa igreja?
Apesar do nome significar “Igreja Nova”, ela foi construída em 1615, então de nova não tem muito — o nome surgiu para diferenciá-la de igrejas mais antigas da cidade.
O mais interessante é que ela foi erguida sobre o local tradicionalmente reconhecido como a casa natal de São Francisco de Assis. Segundo a tradição, foi ali que ele nasceu e viveu antes de abandonar a vida de riqueza.
As estátuas em frente à igreja (3ª foto abaixo), representando os pais de São Francisco, Monna Pica e Pietro di Bernardone.
Na arquitetura, a igreja é um belo exemplo do barroco italiano, com fachada simétrica, interior amplo, altares ornamentados e um equilíbrio bonito entre imponência e serenidade.

So I went to visit places I still hadn’t been to, or hadn’t documented yet. And right next to the convent where I was staying, there was Chiesa Nuova!
So shall we talk a little more about this church?
Although its name means “New Church,” it was built in 1615, so there is nothing very new about it — the name was used to distinguish it from older churches in the city.
What makes it especially interesting is that it was built over the site traditionally recognized as the birthplace of Saint Francis of Assisi. According to tradition, this is where he was born and lived before giving up a life of wealth.

Architecturally, the church is a beautiful example of Italian Baroque, with a symmetrical façade, spacious interior, ornate altars, and a beautiful balance between grandeur and serenity.
Dentro da igreja ainda existem espaços associados à antiga casa, e um dos detalhes mais marcantes é o pequeno cômodo onde, segundo a tradição, São Francisco teria sido trancado pelo próprio pai (2ª e 3ª foto abaixo), que era contra sua escolha espiritual. Isso dá ao lugar uma dimensão muito humana, além da parte religiosa.
Uma coisa que achei fascinante é como esse lugar reúne várias camadas de história no mesmo espaço: uma antiga residência medieval, depois um local de memória e, por fim, uma igreja monumental construída em torno dessa lembrança.

Inside the church, there are still spaces associated with the original house, and one of the most striking details is the small room where, according to tradition, Saint Francis was confined by his own father (2nd and 3rd photos below), who opposed his spiritual path. This gives the place a very human dimension, beyond its religious significance.
One thing I found fascinating is how this place brings together several layers of history within the same space: first a medieval residence, then a site of memory, and finally a monumental church built around that remembrance.
Também gostei do fato de ela ser, em geral, mais tranquila do que outros pontos muito famosos de Assis. Dá para observar os detalhes com calma e sentir melhor a atmosfera do lugar.
É um daqueles lugares em que arquitetura, história e narrativa pessoal se cruzam de uma forma muito interessante e faz juizo com toda a energia da cidade!

I also liked the fact that it is, in general, quieter than other very famous places in Assisi. It allows you to observe the details calmly and better feel the atmosphere of the place.
It is one of those places where architecture, history, and personal narrative intersect in a very interesting way, and it feels in harmony with all the energy of the city.
If you go there, stop by this church — entry is free, and it is just 3 minutes from Assisi’s main square.
